Game Jam: LocoRoco Lite

  • Game Jam Theme: S.U.M.M.E.R. (Simplistic Ultra MiniMalistic Epic Remake.

  • Game Jam Description: The goal of this game jam was to take a game and break it down to its core mechanics and remake the game in a minimalistic way.

I started off by identifying what the most essential mechanics would be for the game. I thought to myself: What is this game's identity? What makes it fun?​ Which lead me to these core points:

  • Camera tilting: The player is controlled by moving tilting the camera up to ~20 degrees.

  • Growing: The player should be able to find fruit that grows the player character when eating, which should also affect the physics of the character. 

    • Additionally, this gives the player a side goal of collecting all the fruit, which is represented on the UI.​

  • Playfulness: All aspects of the game should feel playful and childish. Sound design, level design, aesthetic, physics etc.

​

Finally, I wanted levels to be fast and easy to create, as I had very limited time to work on this project, but still wanted as much out of it as possible.

This project was super fun to work on despite the fact that I didn't have a lot of time to commit to it! It really thought me how fast you can get a game to a playable and fun state, as long as you have a few fun and interesting mechanics! I ended up placing second in this game jam!
