Gameplay of the tutorial mode.
The goal of this project was to make a prototype that tested how different sensors and inputs could be adapted to make VR games more accessible for people with various disabilities.
The prototype included two modes:
-
Endless mode: Waves of unique drones attack the player, and points are earned based on how long the player survives.
-
Tutorial: This mode introduces all the game's mechanics and allows players to learn them at their own pace.
We experimented with different input methods, including eye-tracking, a laser distance sensor, and just two buttons. For the final playtest, we focused on voice recognition, joystick-controlled hand steering, and the default Meta controller, as we felt these options offered the best potential.
Initially, the prototype was a carnival simulator where players could walk around and play games like ring toss, swing the hammer, and shoot ducks. However, after receiving feedback, I realized that many people with disabilities wanted to play more engaging, "real" games. To better test various input methods, I decided to focus on a single, more polished game rather than several smaller carnival games.
